It was our pleasure to interview Yuchi Tian, the director of the film whose film, The Wasteland has premiered in various film festivals.

How did the production of Wasteland begin and what was the most challenging aspect of making the film?

Language, I mean the dialogue.

Sometimes I can’t find the best way to express what he/she is thinking.

How did the story of Wasteland form as a script?

Actually when I saw the location this story just popped up. I heard my friend’s story, combined with experiences, I think I kept it to myself for quite a while.

You have written and directed several short films. Is your writing related to your directing style?

Yes.

What is the greatest aspect of directing a film for you as a director?

Building up the tension between characters. You don't even need that much conversation to explain what’s going on, the movie is the visual arts.

Where do you see yourself as a director in 10 years and what is your goal as a filmmaker?

In five years, I plan to shoot my own feature film, and also finish another two feature scripts. If I can make them into movies that's the best. Yes, my goal is film. By any chance I will get back to stage. 10 years, I hope I can be a real film director.

Does cinema stand out more than the arts for you? Why?

Cinema is part of the arts. It’s hard to say who’s the best, who stand out,

they just have different forms.

What is your next film project as a filmmaker?

My first feature film, I’m rewriting some parts of the story that are based on the draft I have.
